- Throughout the day you will be provided with an array of hands-on experiences with a focus on:
Understanding the role of games in the teaching and learning of mathematics F-10, drawing on the Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics 2.0, the proficiencies and productive dispositions,
Setting up and facilitating your own in school Maths Games Day with your local network schools and,
Participating in a rigorous, challenging and fun filled afternoon playing games while using a range of manipulatives that foster all 6 strands of mathematics: number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability.
Dr. James Russo is an educator and researcher based out of Monash University interested in a wide range of research topics including: the role of challenging tasks, games, and children’s literature as pedagogical approaches; teacher and student emotional responses in the primary mathematics classroom; better understanding the relationship between classroom practice and academic research; and the learning and teaching of mental computation and estimation. James writes regularly for a range of teacher practitioner journals and continues to spend some of his week team-teaching in a primary classroom. He uses this as a space to develop and test teaching ideas, and to stimulate thinking about his research.
Andrew Lorimer-Derham helps people find joy in maths. He has dedicated the last 10 years to helping bring more intentional fun into maths classrooms across Australia through unique hands-on games, puzzles and school workshops. Andrew’s greatest expertise is crafting rich mathematical activities students will happily give up their lunchtime to continue. He has recently partnered with Maths Mate to reimagine the Year 7-8 textbook. Andrew is the founder of Think Square and has worked with numerous math associations, Cricket Australia, app developers, radio stations, magazines and charities to bring creative ideas to life. Andrew will inspire you to see possibilities, take risks, and think outside the box as you shape the next generation of mathematicians.
This event will include morning tea and lunch.
