Important Reporting and Curriculum Implementation Update: Key Advice from MAV for 2025

Important Reporting and Curriculum Implementation Update: Key Advice from MAV for 2025

MAV is reminding schools of the updated requirements and options for reporting teacher judgements in Mathematics, along with important curriculum implementation guidance for 2025.

Mandatory Overarching Judgement Required Each Semester

All schools must provide an overarching teacher judgement in Mathematics for each student, reported to parents/carers and the Department via CASES21. This judgement represents a single, holistic score that reflects the student's overall achievement across the strands taught during the reporting cycle.

Strand-Level Reporting Remains Optional

While schools may choose to include strand-level information in student reports, this is not required. If provided, schools are encouraged to clearly explain how the overarching judgement was determined, ensuring transparency for students, parents, and carers.

Additional guidance on making consistent and defensible teacher judgements, as well as examples of how to aggregate evidence across strands, is available on the Department's website: Additional Guidance for Reporting Teacher Judgements.

Curriculum Implementation Options for 2025

In 2025, schools may:

  • implement Mathematics Version 2.0 across all levels (Foundation – Level A to Level 10), or

  • continue with a combination of Mathematics Version 1.0 for Levels A–D and Version 2.0 for Levels F–10.

By 2026, full implementation of Version 2.0 across all levels will be mandatory. MAV encourages schools to begin planning and professional learning to support this transition.

Use of the 'Progressing Towards' (PT) Score

The ‘Progressing Towards’ (PT) score remains available to support accurate reporting for students who are not yet working at the lowest level of the curriculum. This score allows teachers to recognise and communicate meaningful progress while acknowledging that the student has not yet achieved the relevant standard.

Minimum Reporting Requirements

Schools are reminded that formal reporting of student achievement and progress must occur at least twice per year. Each report must include:

  • a teacher judgement against the relevant achievement standards

  • a clear indication of progress since the last report, using a five-point scale.

MAV recommends that schools engage in professional dialogue about these requirements to ensure consistency, clarity, and high-quality communication with families.
