Description:

During this webinar we will be exploring mapping and how it enables children to demonstrate and communicate their understandings of location, position and direction in space. We will explore the purpose of mapping which is to provide 2D representations of a 3D world on a smaller scale. When children explore 2D “maps” they are experiencing scale and new perspectives of familiar places. This provides opportunities to experience spatial concepts and may bring to light how a 2D map provides a model for their world. The development of spatial reasoning is an essential skill for mapping (Uttal & Sheean, 2014). This Webinar will explore how mapping with children has implications for coding, sequencing and problem solving (Davies et al., 2015). We will share how an inquiry into mapping with a group of 3 year old children led to a trip to the zoo!
