Problem Solving; Symbols and Number Puzzles

This series of puzzles has been inspired by the "Four Fours" task that dates back to the 19th Century. Differentiating this task has produced a variety of puzzles in this book.

Writing number sentences or equations and using a variety of mathematical symbols, provides a creative opportunity for both independent and shared problem solving experiences.

Many of these puzzles follow a similar format or routine, thus making them suitable for 'warm-ups', whole lessons, or even for 'last minute emergency' or teacher relief lessons.

Depending on the cohort of students, the puzzles can be used for enrichment activities, particularly when introducing and applying new symbols and mathematical functions.
