Due to COVID-19, the 2021 Mathematics Camp will be conducted predominantly Virtually
In 2021 the MAV will again host the popular and successful Mathematics Camp for Year 10 Regional students. However, due to COVID-19, the 2021 camp will be conducted predominantly virtually. It is anticipated, COVID-19 restrictions permitting, that students would come to Melbourne on the Thursday and present the findings of their investigative project onsite on the Friday. Alternatively, presentations will be conducted virtually.
The mathematics camp brings together high potential rural and regional students to experience what a career in some of the most exciting organisations in the STEM industry look like.
Twenty-four Year 10 regional students will be selected via an application process to participate in a Virtual Mathematics Camp to be held during the second week of the Term 3 school holidays (Monday 27th September– Friday 1st October).
The aim of the program is to provide a chance for students to gather, in a virtual environment, with like-minded peers and work in small groups to explore hands-on, industry problems. Students will work in a team to complete a real-world mathematics project.
The MAV has partnered with four mathematical industries. Each industry will provide students with a project investigation.
Students receive daily mentoring by mathematicians and industry representatives.
Students will be expected to develop their project presentation and solution as a team, developing 21st century skills including communication, problem solving and creative and critical thinking.
The open-ended projects stretch the application of mathematics past students’ usual experience and challenge them to come up with innovative solutions.
The week will culminate in students presenting their project findings in the presence of the industry partners, invited guests and parents.
Additionally, secondary teachers also provide on-going support. Experience has shown the camp is engaging and practical and provides a hands-on look at how mathematics is used to solve problems in a variety of industry fields.
The camp will be at NO cost to students and MAV will provide:
- access to an online communication forum
- all programmed activities, including:
- access to presentations from Industry representatives
- access to mentors who will work with students, including Mathematicians from tertiary sector
- social opportunities to engage and collaborate with each other
Who can apply - Students from Regional Victoria. Victorian Regions and Regional Cities.
CAMP DATES: Monday 27th September– Friday 1st October
