For over 40 years, MAV Education Consultants have supported schools and early childhood services across Victoria. We tailor our professional learning to your school's unique and evolving needs.
School-based consulting
In-school consulting is at the heart of what we do. Working alongside your staff, we build teacher expertise through:
- Coaching, mentoring and personalised support
- Modelled mathematics teaching
- Whole-staff professional learning and curriculum days
- Support for professional learning teams with planning and implementation
- Developing mathematics leaders and leadership capacity
- Collaboration with clusters of schools within a region
Our Professional Growth Model
Every partnership follows four phases, so your professional learning is built around your goals and keeps evolving.
-
1. Identify
We work with school leaders to find out what's working well and set professional learning goals. It starts with a meeting where leaders describe their school's context and current approach to teaching mathematics.
Leaders then complete a discovery survey aligned with the key elements of the Numeracy Improvement Guide for School Leaders. It helps evaluate your current mathematics program and highlight areas for improvement, and the results shape your professional learning goals. School visits and classroom observations can add further insight.
-
2. Co-plan
Together with your leadership team, we design a professional learning program customised to your goals, taking into account your staff and students, for example an influx of new or graduate teachers, or new teaching practices.
We draw on research aligned to your goals to guide pedagogy and mathematical content knowledge. Staff read and discuss relevant academic literature together, and those professional conversations help shape the program. Your leaders stay involved throughout, setting the big-picture parameters for what will most benefit your staff.
Our consultants work as a team. They are experienced teachers and leaders currently working in schools across all sectors of Victoria, and we match each school with the consultant whose expertise best fits its needs at the time. We can also draw on leading mathematics education experts from across Australia.
-
3. Enact
The co-planned program is put into action, with flexible delivery tailored to your school. This may include:
- Modelled mathematics teaching
- Coaching in the classroom
- Whole-staff professional learning and curriculum days
- Support for professional learning teams with planning and implementation
As your school progresses, we step back and work directly with your numeracy leader to build their capacity.
-
4. Review
Together we review student and school data to assess progress and impact. This reflection shapes the next steps, so your professional learning keeps evolving and driving meaningful improvement.
