Applications for 2018 are now open
In 2018 the MAV will again host the successful Mathematics Camp. The mathematics camp brings together high potential rural and regional students to experience what a career in some of the most exciting organisations in the STEM industry look like.
A selection process results in 24 Year 10 regional students participating in a 4 and half day camp in metropolitan Melbourne and completing a real-world mathematics project.
The Mathematics Camp will be held during the first week of the Term 3 school holidays (Monday 2nd – Friday 6th July).
The aim of the program is to provide a chance for students to gather with like-minded peers and work in small groups to explore hands-on, industry problems.
The MAV has partnered with four mathematical industries. Each industry will provide students with a project investigation.
Students will receive daily mentoring by mathematicians and industry representatives.
Students develop their project presentation and solution as a team, developing 21st century skills including communication, problem solving and creative and critical thinking.
The open-ended projects stretch the application of mathematics past students’ usual experience and challenge them to come up with innovative solutions.
The week culminates in students presenting their project findings in the presence of the industry partners, invited guests and parents.
Additionally, secondary teachers will also provide on-going support. It will be an engaging, practical and hands-on look at how mathematics is used to solve problems in a variety of industry fields.
The MAV will provide:
- three meals per day
- accommodation (twin share)
- travel in and around Melbourne
- return travel to and from Melbourne, to the value of $50,
- all programmed activities.
Who can apply - Victorian Regions and Regional Cities
