The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) and Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) (Honours) prepare graduates to teach in both early childhood and primary school settings. The course will be of interest to individuals interested in pursuing a teaching career in which they can adapt their expertise to suit the learning needs of a broad age group (birth to 12 years).

Course content focuses on three broad areas:

  • Curriculum and pedagogy for birth to 12 years
  • Creating inclusive learning environments that nurture diversity
  • Transition to, and development of, a career in education

Students will study a range of curriculum with a focus on the key curriculum areas of literacy, mathematics and science. For students planning to seek employment in the Catholic system, a specialist sequence in religious education is available. Our graduates will develop expertise to work with young children, their families and communities. They will develop skills to support the creation of learning environments that nurture and support children as they learn.

Many of our student’s study education at ACU because they are interested in making a positive difference in the lives of children. We encourage our students to work collaboratively for justice to make and to share a more just and equitable society. Our Professional and Community Engagement program, embedded into our courses, provides several opportunities for students to complete practicum in settings that are consistent with these values.

To ensure we graduate profession ready teachers we have built into the course several units focusing on the individual development of a teacher. Units include:

  • Early Childhood Leadership, Management and Advocacy.
  • Transition into the Profession

Graduates of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) are well positioned for further study in the Master of Education.

       

Bachelor Of Education (Primary) - 4-year approved course for primary teaching in Victoria. 

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree is for people who want to teach in Catholic and other faith-based schools, government and independent primary schools.

This course will develop primary school teachers with strengths in:

  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • science
  • technology

It combines theory with practice, ensuring students not only learn about the social, political and cultural contexts that shape education in schools, but also gain practical experience in primary school teaching by being placed within schools during the course.

Studies in religious education and theology are included to enable graduates to seek accreditation to teach religious education in Catholic and other faith-based schools. Students not seeking such accreditation may undertake approved alternative units. In Queensland and in Victoria, the course includes a Lutheran strand. Students choosing to complete this strand are accredited to teach in Lutheran primary schools. Students wishing to teach in Anglican schools (in Queensland only) can take alternative units.

Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Mathematics) - 4-year course

The Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Mathematics) is a dual degree in Education and the Arts for students who want to teach Mathematics in secondary schools (in any government, non-government or independent school).

Students will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required of an effective classroom teacher and learn about the mathematics curriculum.

Secondary school placements during the course ensure valuable practical experience for students.

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education - 4-year approved course for primary teaching in Victoria

The course teaches students to apply an understanding of child development, curriculum theories and pedagogies in designing and implementing child-centred, play-based and developmentally appropriate programs in childcare, preschool and school contexts. Students also learn to identify and respond positively to contemporary issues and the changing work context within early childhood and primary education. 

This course is offered in flexible study modes over 4 years, or can be fast-tracked by studying under Deakin’s 3-trimester system, enabling completion in 9 trimesters.

Bachelor of Education (Primary) - 4 years full-time or part-time equivalent

Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching Secondary- 4-year undergraduate program approved course for secondary teaching in Victoria

Deakin's Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts degree will introduce you to the knowledge and competencies required by secondary teachers as well as providing you with a broad understanding of the practice of educators. The course will also give you in-depth knowledge in one or more fields of study within the Bachelor of Arts.

As part of the teaching component of this course you will learn key skills required for working as a secondary teacher through studying topics such as teacher-learner identity, policy, schooling and society, how to create learning-teaching environments, pedagogy, understanding children and adolescents, and professional identity and curriculum. You are required to complete a minimum of 80 days supervised school experience over the duration of the course, providing hands-on experience in a classroom setting.

Studies in the arts will provide you with opportunities to develop skills of critical and systematic thinking; an imaginative understanding and appreciation of the theory and practice of the social sciences; enhanced cultural sensitivity and understanding; skills and knowledge relevant to employment in the modern workforce and familiarity with the use and importance of information technology in learning and employment. Bachelor of Teaching Science/Master of Teaching (Secondary) - 4-year approved course for secondary teaching in Victoria

You're good at maths and science and want to share these skills with others. You'd like to help students grow in confidence and motivate them at school. You'd like a career that you can take with you anywhere. This double degree sets you up for a career as a secondary school teacher, in mathematics, science or IT, in middle schools through to VCE. You'll spend time in each year of your degree observing and leading students in school classrooms. You'll also learn to develop your own teaching identity and how to use your individual skills to help your students learn.

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education is an innovative and contemporary teaching degree that prepares you for a rewarding teaching career.
