Welcome back to term 4, and I hope you had a relaxing break.

We are still moving ahead with many initiatives, here are 4 reasons to get involved for term 4.

We will soon be sending out a MAV stakeholder survey. As part of implementing its new 2018 to 2020 Strategic Plan, MAV is seeking your feedback on a number of issues related to mathematics education and MAV membership, products and services. We want all maths educators, whether members of MAV or not, to contribute their ideas, to help us plan further advancements in how MAV delivers value to you and the profession. Primary Schools: Are you looking for a whole school approach to improving mathematics?

MAV-MGSE

Our call for Primary schools to join the two-year whole school development program are open.

MAV and the Mathematics Education Group (MEG), at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE), have developed a two-year school improvement program for Primary Schools in Victoria. 

This program will allow schools to develop the tools and techniques to implement and measure improvement, while working with a network of like schools striving for improvement.

Free Online Professional Learning

The following workshops are FREE to all Victoria teachers. Hosted by MAV, these workshops will be ‘hands-on’ offering a similar experience to our face to face workshop – but now available to more schools across the state!

Although individuals can join using a mobile device, the nature of the workshops will encourage collaboration and being with others is going to provide improved outcomes.  If you are looking for a school in your area that you can attend that may be a DET Polycom hub, some events have hubs as part of the booking process. PRIMARY

The importance of developing children’s counting skills: The move from rote to rational counting

Book now

In this hands-on workshop participants will discuss the importance of young children developing each aspect of the five counting principles that govern and define counting as elaborated by Gelman and Gallistel (1978). Video excerpts and activities will demonstrate what these counting principles look like in practice. Counting tasks from the Mathematics Online Interview will be linked to the Counting section of the Framework of Mathematical Learning and activities from the Mathematics Developmental Continuum. The conceptual understanding needed to move children from using inefficient strategies, such as counting by ones, to more efficient strategies will be highlighted.

Let's get started! Using games to promote fluency and reasoning

Back as a repeat session by popular demand for those who missed out!

Teachers will be elbow deep in dice and cards during this workshop. The session will focus on developing mathematical fluency and reasoning in students through the use of hands-on and engaging card and dice games. Teachers will be armed with a range of activities and we will explore how to easily differentiate for a range of student learning needs.

Identifying and  providing for mathematically promising students (Vic Association for Gifted and Talented Children)

Identification and provision for mathematically promising students can be a challenge for all involved, and there is some debate about which should come first – identification or programming. In this hands-on workshop participants will learn the definition of mathematical promise, contemplate the possible goals of mathematical talent development, and explore the multiple tools and approaches available for identification of high mathematical potential. Then a range of different strategies for mathematical talent development will be shared.

The High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) were developed by the Victorian DET and consist of 10 instructional practices that reliably increase student learning wherever they are applied. They are a resource for teachers, professional learning communities and school leaders to use in improving teaching and learning outcomes. This session will explore an approach that aims to maximize the value of the HITS’ implementation. We will look at key components of the ten individual HITS, and explore a research-based model of effective ‘feedback’ (one of the HITS), discovering how this strategy relates to the other HITS.

Algorithmics (HESS)

Algorithmics (HESS) was introduced into the VCE curriculum in 2015. The motivation for the creation of the study was to encourage more students to develop the critical thinking skills, structure and concepts to enable them to participate as creators of computational technology and information systems. “Algorithmic thinking is a major component of computational thinking and is seen as being one of the most important computer science topics for developing critical thinking skills”. Successful students of the subject are eligible for university credits in Computer Science.

GeoGebra in the classroom

This is a beginner’s introductory session on the free software, GeoGebra. In this session participants will see how GeoGebra can be used as an effective tool for supporting a visual and interactive mathematics pedagogy that emphasises conceptual understanding rather than processes. Participants will be shown a demonstration of how GeoGebra can be utilised in the classroom when teaching Quadratic Transformations, Trigonometry and the Unit Circle, Pythagoras’ Theorem and Geometry. It will also include some ways teachers can enhance student understanding by using pre-programmed applets within GeoGebra, as well as involving students in the creation process by getting them to create their own GeoGebra files. The skills learnt in this presentation can be applied to all secondary year levels. Participants will be required to download and install the free GeoGebra Classic software from https://www.geogebra.org/download.

International modelling challengeInternational Mathematical Modelling Challenge

Heading into its fourth consecutive year in Australia, the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge is a team competition for up to four secondary students and one team advisor that aims to promote mathematical modelling to solve problems of real-world importance. Since 2016, participation numbers have tripled each year, making this widely popular and completely free to enter challenge essential for mathematical modelling for secondary schools in Australia. MERGA conference42nd Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) Conference 2019

The 2019 MERGA Conference will be held at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia from the 30th June – 4th July 2019. The MERGA conference offers an important forum among professionals, researchers and students to promote, share and disseminate rigorous research in mathematics education across Australasia. The theme of the 2019 conference is Research Impacting Classroom Practice. This focus was chosen to advance the mathematical experience of the students to whom we ultimately contribute.

The conference will also feature a Teachers’ Day on the 29th June, providing high-quality professional learning in mathematics education, across all phases of schooling. The hands-on approach in all workshops will ensure that teachers will be able to apply their learning experiences with their students

We are fortunate to have been able to attract some highly regarded international speakers in Professors Jere Confrey, Paul Cobb, Doug Clements, and Julie Sarama. In addition, Professor Di Siemon will deliver the Clements Foyster Address and Professor Doug Clarke the Teachers’ Day Keynote speech. Professional Development Opportunity for Years 5, 6, and 7 Maths Teachers in an International Research Project

Profs David Clarke (University of Melbourne) and Doug Clarke (Australian Catholic University) are running a research project that studies mathematics teachers’ thinking processes during lesson planning, teaching, and reflection. We are currently recruiting Years 5, 6, and 7 teachers to take part in the project.

If you agree to participate in this project, you will be asked to adapt and teach a provided lesson plan (Lesson 1) and then create a lesson plan yourself for a follow-up lesson and teach the lesson (Lesson 2). You will also be asked to complete several online questionnaires before and after teaching Lessons 1 and 2. Participation in this project will involve approximately 10 hours in total (including the teaching of Lessons 1 and 2). Your time commitment in this project can count towards your professional development to meet registration requirements if you are a registered teacher in Victoria and in Western Australia. (If you are registered in a different state or territory in Australia, your participation time may still count towards your required professional development but please check your local requirements.)
