Description:
NOTE: This event is for government schools only and is free to attend.
The aim of this program is to challenge high ability students in Years 5/6 in a fun, challenging, collaborative and competitive mathematics-based games day. This event will be delivered virtually. This will also improve student engagement and ultimately achievement in mathematics by providing access to student enrichment Mathematics Games Days which are not available to them in mainstream learning settings in metro, regional and rural areas.
Maths Games Days are a very effective vehicle for getting young people - particularly in the middle years of schooling - enthused about maths. Problem solving and mathematical games address the Victorian Curriculum proficiency strands. Students work in teams of 4 & compete for a variety of prizes including individual prizes for creativity, contribution to group work, and lucky door prizes. Lateral thinking wins the day.
Students will complete virtually against other teams - schools will need to provide a space where students can work in teams of 4 and complete the online challenges. It is expected that students are still supervised by a teacher for virtual games days and that all students have access to a device with internet access. The games day works best if students work together in one classroom & can be actively supervised & assisted by their teacher.
The day begins with all schools meeting on a ZOOM call to explain how the program for the day and how to submit answer. Students will then work through a series of puzzles that can be accessed via a link & enter their solutions through google forms. The ZOOM call remains open for the event for assistance but schools do not need to remain on the call all day.
Please email Jessica Mount at jmount@mav.vic.edu.au with the number of teams you wish to register (1 team = 4 students).
