Description:
The Maths in Schools professional learning team will explore how a Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) approach can reshape the way Years 7–10 students engage with chance concepts. Participants will look at moving from simple physical materials - such as coins, cards and spinners — to using digital tools to streamline data collection, visualisation and analysis. The focus is on building strong conceptual understanding around randomness, sample size, variation, and the relationship between experimental and theoretical probability. Teachers will leave with access to ready-to-use classroom tasks from our Maths in Schools online courses.
Dr. John West and Suzanne Carter
John is a mathematics education consultant and author. He has taught mathematics at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. John teaches in the Mathematical Association of Western Australia's Problem Solving Program and as a casual lecturer at The University of Notre Dame Australia.
John is the WA Project Officer for The University of Adelaide's Maths in Schools project and as a fly-in/fly-out numeracy consultant for Coober Pedy Area School in South Australia.
John has also worked as a Numeracy Consultant for the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), the Association of Independent Schools (AISWA), Catholic Education WA (CEWA) and Educational Services Australia (ESA).
John is President of the Mathematical Association of Western Australia (MAWA).
