Description:

This event is targeted at year 3-10 teachers.

"When am I ever going to need to know this?" is a fair question. But perhaps what students should be asking is, "When am I ever going to need to think for myself?" Even in the dawning of the AI-age, and maybe more so now than ever before because of it, the answer is easy: "All the time!" At the Australian Maths Trust, maths and algorithmics aren't simply lists of things to know, but ways of understanding, creating and communicating that help develop the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. In this workshop, Dr Chris Wetherell and Emily Peterson will draw on several of our long-established competitions and programs, including the Maths Challenge and Maths Enrichment, to promote the value of deeper thinking, both in solving unfamiliar problems and in asking new and interesting questions.

Presenters:

Dr Chris Wetherell is a mathematician who works for the Australian Maths Trust as part of the executive team. He is also an experienced maths teacher and can't help but find opportunities to share his love of maths with students, through local, national and international workshops. He is lead author of AMT's Maths Enrichment materials and contributes maths and algorithmics problems to most of AMT's competitions and programs. In his spare time, you'll find him folding serviettes, writing down strings of numbers and drawing geometric patterns, that is, working on an idea for his next maths problem.

Emily Peterson is a maths and English teacher with 15+ years' experience working in a regional setting in large, public secondary schools, including in leadership roles. She was a member of the executive committee of the Mathematical Association of Tasmania for over 8 years, is now a councillor for the Canberra Mathematical Association and has presented many workshops for teachers. Emily works full time as Senior Program Designer and Editor for the Australian Maths Trust and is also Chair of the Australian Mathematics Competition Primary Problems Committee. She has three young children, a maths teacher husband and no spare time. Her maths problems tend to be inspired by everyday life.
