Description:

Early Childhood Webinar Series

We are excited to announce the launch of a webinar series focused on mathematics in early childhood education.

Designed to support your professional growth, this series explores how mathematics can be meaningfully embedded within play-based and emergent curricula. Drawing on both academic research and practitioner expertise, each session will highlight key areas of early childhood mathematics by offering practical strategies, fresh insights, and inspiring examples to help you recognise and extend mathematical thinking through everyday play.

Webinar One: Active learning and collective participation in mathematics professional development (PD)

The first session will illustrate what active learning and collective participation looked like in PD when preschool – year 2 teachers were learning about ways to use embodied modes (gesture, tracing, body movement and drawing) in mathematics learning experiences with their children. Katherin will share what the teachers said about their experiences during the PD and also what the embodied activities look like in classroom practice.

Katherin Cartwright is a passionate mathematics educator and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong teaching pre-service teachers. Katherin’s PhD research was on teachers' understanding of mathematical fluency and the characteristics of fluency students display. She is currently part of a three-year research project focusing on Embodied Learning in Early Mathematics and Science (ELEMS). Katherin is an active member of MANSW (NSW’s mathematics association) and is currently president of MANSW. Katherin loves teaching and enjoys talking about mathematics, curriculum, and pedagogy. Katherin’s teaching background is with primary-aged students. She has a particular interest in researching mathematics approaches for primary teachers that will have a future impact on classroom practice.
