In August 2006 the Victorian Institute of Teaching undertook a round of consultations with teachers and principals, teacher educators, and peak organisations representing education stakeholders over the development of a new process for approving teacher education courses being phased in from January 2007.
The guidelines for the approval of pre-service teacher education courses specifically focus on the outcomes required for graduates. The Institutes draft Standards of Professional Practice for Graduating Teachers describe these outcomes. The guidelines suggest the broad directions tertiary institutions might take to ensure graduates meet these standards.
The Mathematical Association of Victoria has made a submission to the Institute that, in essence, argues that the course requirements for teachers preparing to work as mathematics educators at any level of schooling should not be watered down.
