SESSION A               9:00 am – 10:15 am
A1 From Games To Investigations
Doug Williams
'Start from where the kids are at' - a good principle for guiding lesson planning. Well we pretty much know where all kids are at with respect to playing games - they love it. In this workshop we explore some table top games for two which capture that interest, then we add kinaesthetic and visual components to the recipe, discuss and explore a hidden challenge, and before you know it, you are working like a mathematician investigating a problem. Genuine mathematical content, thoughtful teaching craft and we will be Working Mathematically in VELS.
A2 Linking Maths with the Real World
Sue Gunningham
Repeated (B2, C2)
This workshop will highlight the value of using real life contexts to help students recognise that being numerate is essential for dealing competently with everyday life.  Participants will trial some activities and view some supporting resources.
A3 Conducting a Maths Activity
Day for Year 5 and 6  Students
Carmel Burgess
Repeated (C4, D4)
This hands-on workshop shows how to conduct a Maths Activity Day for groups or clusters of schools. Participants will experience activities and be provided with materials including, instructions, program outline, list of resources required, game and question sheets, answer sheets, marking scheme, and an Excel spreadsheet for entering scores and showing progressive totals. Cancelled.
A4 A Maths Menu
Aaron Peeters
Repeated (B4)
Aaron will share his maths menu of rich mathematical activities. We will explore the menu items and evaluate how well they engage students, cater for mixed abilities and entice students to delve deeper into mathematics. Participants will receive their own menu of activities which include computer, hands-on and real life tasks to take back to the classroom
A5 Funky Fractions
Peggy Ashton and Jenny Vincent
Repeated (B5, D2)
This workshop will explore the development of students’ fraction knowledge and understandings. Fun hands on activities will provide many rich assessment opportunities for identifying students’ misconceptions. Clear connections will be made to the formal curriculum (VELS) for planning and assessment purposes. Cancelled.
SESSION B       10:45 am – 12:00 pm
B1 Digging Into Hands On Tasks
Doug Williams
For more than a decade the Mathematics Task Centre Project has been collecting hands-on problem solving tasks and collecting and distributing classroom wisdom related to integrating them into the curriculum. They can be the beginning of many real alternatives to the textbook/worksheet diet which many teachers are now finding a little ineffective. This session is for those who are beginning to think about richer possibilities for their curriculum. Explore a few tasks; find out how to access their depth in the context of students learning to work like a mathematician; extend your knowledge of the breadth of web-based support. To the degree that you consider the connection with this project commercial, this could be interpreted as a commercial presentation.
B2 Linking Maths with the Real World
Sue Gunningham
Repeated (A2, C2)
This workshop will highlight the value of using real life contexts to help students recognise that being numerate is essential for dealing competently with everyday life.  Participants will trial some activities and view some supporting resources.
B3 Tea Towels and Tablecloths
Sharyn Livy
Repeated (C3, D3)
Come fly away with me on my tablecloth!  We will discover a magic land where we learn about Number, Space and Measurement.  This will be a hands-on workshop with plenty of ideas for teachers to use with their primary students.  (P-6)
B4 A Maths Menu
Aaron Peeters
Repeated (A4)
Aaron will share his maths menu of rich mathematical activities. We will explore the menu items and evaluate how well they engage students, cater for mixed abilities and entice students to delve deeper into mathematics. Participants will receive their own menu of activities which include computer, hands-on and real life tasks to take back to the classroom
B5 Funky Fractions

Clear connections will be made to the formal curriculum (VELS) for planning and assessment purposes.   Cancelled.
SESSION C            12:05 pm – 1:20 pm
C1 Strategies For Enhancing Number Sense
Doug Williams
Drawing for the most part on the Calculating Changes project we will use a range of activities to illustrate how teachers have been able to enhance children's number sense beyond what is usually expected for the age. What features of these activities are likely to encourage learning? What learning happens? How are these strategies likely to influence the students' confidence in their own number sense? You will learn a few things you can 'use tomorrow' and, more importantly, where you can find information to continue your exploration. This session will be particularly relevant to P-3 teachers. To the extent that you consider the connection with the Calculating Changes project to be commercial, this could be interpreted as a commercial presentation.

C5 Inquiry and Extension (P – 6)
Jennifer Bowden
Repeated (D5)
This workshop with look at an open-ended approach to mathematics. We will look at one concept and see how it can be developed to take students on an inquiry based, fun filled and challenging mathematical journey.  We will discuss program enhancing strategies for gifted students and their incorporation into classroom programs.
SESSION D             2:20 pm – 3:35 pm
D1 Working Mathematically
With 24 Blackbirds

Doug Williams
One session - one problem? Yes, and by the end you might be wishing you had more time. As you work like a mathematician to explore its depths you will have opportunity to reflect on the teaching craft which has engaged so many students (and teachers) in it. The workshop is intended to provide time for you to have some personal fun with mathematics, but also to encourage you to consider the possibilities of a curriculum which has investigation and higher order thinking at its core, rather than skill practice and recipe responses.
D2 Funky Fractions
