VELS and New Approaches to Reporting

The VCAA and DE&T’s Office of Teaching and Learning have been developing (or revising) the key documents for mathematics and the Victorian Essential Learning Standards.

The revised VELS Mathematics Standards can be found at:
http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/essential/discipline/mathematics/index.html

Assessment maps provide sample student work to illustrate the Standards. There are some already available at these places. Click on the Levels to explore.

Find them at:

Year 1: http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/maps/maps_domain/maths/measurement/midyear1.html

Year 2: http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/maps/maps_domain/maths/measurement/midyear2.html

Year 6: http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/maps/maps_domain/maths/measurement/midyear6.html

Year 9: http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/assessment/maps/maps_domain/maths/measurement/endyear9.html

The new semester reporting methods (A to E) for mathematics are to follow the standards contained in the VELS. The mechanism for achieving this includes the use of stages based around semesters and is presented in the form of "progression points". These (at least for levels 1 to 3) can be found at:

http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/blueprint/fs1/guidelines/progression_points/about_PP.asp. Clearly more material will appear in these and related sites shortly.

Our Professional Officer, Ian Lowe, presented workshops about VELS and to teachers in a range of regions and individual Government, Independent and Catholic schools during 2006.

Ian Lowe's presentation is available to download as a PDF or a PowerPoint presentation.
