Welcome to MAV Curriculum Planning

Victorian teachers need to implement VELS. This is the overall framework for the curriculum. A summary of the curriculum for Maths and for Interdisciplinary Learning, in 3 pages, is here.

We also need to teach so that good learning takes place. This is the classroom pedagogy, and is described clearly in the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT). You can review the six principles here.

The planning process links the two. Planning should take account of the VELS requirements, the assessment and reporting framework, and the range of the students in the class. It should use the best possible learning activities and provide a way of linking the resources that are available to implement the framework to the genuine learning needs in your class. It should also provide a level of continuity between the year levels in your school and the need for continuity between primary and secondary schools. At secondary level it also needs to link helpfully to VCE and other senior secondary programs.

This site offers several levels of detail in planning. The simplest level is 'Start-up resource lists'.

The next stage is looking for specific ideas for learning and teaching to develop understanding. These are found under the headings of 'Teach for Understanding'.

The next level is 'Differentiated Unit Plans'. These provide much more structure, accomodating diversity with maths level and learning style.

A commitment to implementing Maths With Attitude (Maths300 and Task centre challenges) leads to a curriculum that balances Working Mathematically against toolbox (concept and skill development). This is called Working Mathematically in VELS.

Finally there are Resource Lists, from VELS level 1 to 6 in all dimensions of mathematics.
