• Differentiate by VELS level and learning style
In each year level each dimension is covered in each semester, to take 17 weeks. The unit plans mix open-ended lessons (in mixed ability groups) with direct instruction, practice via worksheets and computers, and problem solving. They demonstrate how you can cater for 2, 3 or even 4 VELS levels in your classroom and include Working Mathematically throughout.
• Working mathematically for half the time
The purpose of learning skills is to solve genuine mathematical problems, based in the world of mathematics and in the real world.
Problem solving, an important component of working mathematically, is the major reason for learning the skills.
Working Mathematically will continually develop and practise skills, but also adds value – it enables students to develop mathematical confidence and the ability to transfer their knowledge, to use those concepts and skills elsewhere.
