STRATEGIC PLANNING

During 2001 the MAV contracted the consultants Board Plus to carry out a strategic plan for the Association. The aim of the project was to identify the key issues that the MAV needs to address in the next few years to ensure that we remain viable and responsive to our members' needs. The process used for this review was:

  • Research was undertaken into the relevant aspects of the environment in which we operate Consultation was carried out with a total of 27 people, through telephone and face to face interviews with a range of different stakeholders. These people included metropolitan and regional members, external stakeholders, council and committee members, and staff Questionnaires were prepared in consultation with the MAV, one for councillors and one for stakeholders
  • A facilitated council meeting was held to assist with the definition of the key elements of forward strategy

An extensive report was prepared for council, with many recommendations. However, the four major recommendations on which the consultants' report was based are detailed below. These were adopted by Council at its final meeting for 2001.Key recommendation 1: That the MAV takes ownership of its Strategic Plan. Key recommendation 2: That the current Council shows leadership in reflecting input and identifying how the MAV will remain viable and vital in the long term. It must identify its core business. Key Recommendation 3: That the MAV defines its potential members and supporters (present and the future) and identifies how the MAV will work with them and better represent them. Key Recommendation 4: That the MAV demonstrates internally and externally that it is representative and is supporting and promoting the interests of its members and potential members.Council will work over the next 12 months to put into place action plans to ensure that these recommendations are carried out. A series of secondary recommendations flowed from these key recommendations. You can download the complete set of recommendations as a pdf file here. During 2002, Council will consider the detail of these secondary recommendations, and which should be adopted and to what extent.

On 11th November. Council met for a full day to consider our core business and directions for the Association. At that meeting we proposed the following:
