Teach maths for understanding (F-10) : KEYSBOROUGH 2012
28 May 2012 to 05 Jun 2012 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm
Your FREE access to the amazing MAV developed online Teach Maths for Understanding opens up an extraordinary set of teaching resources. Now, Dr Ian Lowe provides hands on advice about the best way to start using TM4U. He covers material such as: How to teach all content at all AC levels and how this all relates directly to AusVELS. Explore under the leadership of the author! Differentiated Unit Plans The other main part of the website is the creation of Differentiated Unit Plans for Years 3 to 10. These assume a 6-year spread of achievement level in the classroom. There will be feedback from schools who have used this method – all positive! Closing date for registrations is : 22/05/2012
2012 CAS Calculators in Year 9 and 10 CLAYTON & BRUNSWICK
29 May 2012 to 19 Jun 2012 05:00 pm to 07:00 pm
In these sessions teachers will have the opportunity to explore a variety of CAS activities relating to the Year 9 and 10 VELS/Australian Mathematics curriculum. Separate workshops will be offered for CASIO Classpad and TI Nspire users. Closing date for registrations is : 27/05/2012
BALLARAT - Working Mathematically in the Australian Curriculum (Number and Algebra) Year 5 - 10 2012 29 May 2012 to 19 Jun 2012 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm
Understanding, problem solving and reasoning in Number The proficiencies are the core of the Australian Curriculum, and this workshop will provide a wide range of ways of engaging and involving students through group work and hands-on materials. Content will spread over whole numbers, decimals, integers and fractions and relate each activity clearly to the AC level content description to which it applies. Understanding, problem solving and reasoning in Algebra While the ideas clearly overlap with the series “Understanding Algebra in the middle years”, examples will be all different from that series, and the relationship to the AC level content descriptions will be made clear. Closing date for registrations is : 22/05/2012
ESSENDON - Working as a mathematician using Maths300 and Differentiating the Australian Curriculum for teachers of Years 3 to 10 07 Jun 2012 to 14 Jun 2012 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm
Dr Ian Lowe (MAV) will combine these two ideas over 2 x 2 hrs sessions of hands-on activities and advice on curriculum planning. Teachers will be inspired to use Maths300 to make their classrooms more engaging. They will also be shown how to use the MAV's Teach Maths for Understanding website to create a differentiated curriculum tailored to the Australian Curriculum.

7. Big numbers, funny money and lotteries
Maths Masters Burkard Polster and Marty Ross have provided some great classroom discussion starters in t5heir regular Age column over the last couple of weeks. Check them out at:

8. Jerusalem and Basketball
Yes, there is a clear link here with mathematics and the folk at CSIRO tell you all about it at their AMSI supported newsletter http://www.csiro.au/helix/mathsbyemail/newsletter/newsletter.html
9. Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes project feedback
The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Energising Science and Mathematics Education strategy http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/directions/mathsciencestrategy.htm is still generating change and support for mathematics educators. The latest initiative has been the Department's Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes project. But DEECD want to know whether or not they are heading in the right direction and so have asked the MAV to put out an URGENT CALL for feedback. So, if you teach in a government school, have you looked at the Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes? They contain a range of easily accessible, quality, digital resources organised around key topics/ideas in Mathematics. If you haven’t looked at them, please join Ultranet Mathematics Design Space Number 66512121, or Ultranet VCE eBookbox Design Space Number 108535810. Once you have looked at them, help the team at DEECD improve them by providing feedback!
DEECD are currently seeking feedback from Mathematics teachers who have used the:
- VELS Levels 4, 5 or 6 Mathematics eBookboxes
- VCE General and Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics eBookboxes.
Please do take the time (DEECD estimates between 2 to 5 minutes) to complete the online survey which will help inform further development of eBookboxes. The link to the survey, which will be open until 15 June 2012, is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Ultranet_eBookboxes_survey
Keep in touch with any mathematics education related news and keep an eye our for Edition 12:08 of MAVlist. Until then,
Cheers,
Simon
