MAVlist 12:06

Folks,

The main purpose of this MAVlist is to invite you to a FREE Maths Master Public Lecture to be held at the MAV on Tuesday, 8 May 2012. Remember the hail and storm on Christmas Day? Well, the training room at the MAV was pretty much rendered unusable. ANSVAR Insurance stepped up to the mark though and have refurbished the MAV Education Centre. So what better way to open up this freshly painted wonder could there be than to ask Dr Marty Ross to tell members about Idiot Wind: Climate Change, Freak Storms and Blowhards? Oh, and we will be slipping in a quick AGM along the way. In fact, this MAVlist is your formal notice that the MAV's 2011-12 Financial report is now online and available for all to read. All members are invited to the AGM to be held after Marty Ross has spoken. 5:30pm, Tuesday, 8 May 2012. You can find all of the details, the Financial Report, AGM agenda and how to RSVP at http://www.mav.vic.edu.au/about-us/mav-council.html.

Mind you, there are a few other rush items worth mentioning right now:

  1. MAV Professional Development for May
  2. Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes project feedback
  3. A Mathematical Sculpture that moves (and yet is set in concrete)
  4. Survey? Census?

1. MAV Professional Development for May
You know where to go to register for all of these wondeful offerings don't you? http://registration.mav.vic.edu.au/Reg/ of course!

2. Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes project feedback
The Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Energising Science and Mathematics Education strategy http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/directions/mathsciencestrategy.htm is still generating change and support for mathematics educators. The latest initiative has been the Department's Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes project. But DEECD want to know whether or not they are heading in the right direction and so have asked the MAV to put out an URGENT CALL for feedback. So, if you teach in a government school, have you looked at the Ultranet Mathematics and VCE eBookboxes? They contain a range of easily accessible, quality, digital resources organised around key topics/ideas in Mathematics. If you haven’t looked at them, please join Ultranet Mathematics Design Space Number 66512121, or Ultranet VCE eBookbox Design Space Number 108535810. Once you have looked at them, help the team at DEECD improve them by providing feedback!

DEECD are currently seeking feedback from Mathematics teachers who have used the:

  • VELS Levels 4, 5 or 6 Mathematics eBookboxes
  • VCE General and Further Mathematics, Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Specialist Mathematics eBookboxes.

Please do take the time (DEECD estimates between 2 to 5 minutes) to complete the online survey which will help inform further development of eBookboxes. The link to the survey, which will be open until 15 June 2012, is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Ultranet_eBookboxes_survey

3. A Mathematical Sculpture that moves (and yet is set in concrete)
Maths Master Burkard Polster has recently made a truly fascinating find. He and Marty Ross share it with you in their latest Age article: http://education.theage.com.au/cmspage.php?intid=147&intversion=120 then visit QEDCat's movie website for the number ten raised almost literally to the power of infinity http://www.qedcat.com/movieclips/index.html

4. Survey? Census?
Use this CSIRO?AMSI newsletter as a discussion starter one morning … http://www.csiro.au/helix/mathsbyemail/newsletter/newsletter.html

Well, I am off to the AGE VCE and Careers Expo http://theage.digitaleditions.com.au/mycareerfeature/?href=AGECAREERFEATURE/2011/05/02 and I am hoping to meet a few friendly faces, so please do come along and visit us at Stand 102.
