1. Special PD Day for early career primary school teachers

Saturday, 2 April is a great day for all primary school teachers wanting a dose of the best mathematics and english curriculum and pedagogical advice going around - especially for all the newer teachers at your school. So please, please support this historic venture between the MAV and our English counterparts at VATE. I have taken the liberty of attaching the flyer - apologies in advance to those whose IT systems strip out such items. Anyway, you can get the details AND register all those teachers your school has committed to supporting by visiting http://www.vate.org.au/vate.nsf/EventDetailsEn/5DEA503A4F51F67BCA257844007F5D1C

2. MAV Footy Tipping Competition with Peter Daicos

Open to ALL MAV members and their students, we have a very special MAVlist offering for 2011; Footy Tipping with mathematical gizmos and teaching resources as year-end prizes. So if you think you have what it takes to pick a winner and a winning margin, get your class involved in the MAV’s footy tipping

competition. Visit www.scorefivefooty.com and register as a player and then join our league. You’ll need to quote the following details:

League name: Mathematical Association of Victoria

Passcode: mav

The legendary Peter Daicos is aware of the MAV competition - he is not convinced that mathematical minds necessarily make for great tipsters - but nonetheless he will be offering MAVlisters a bit of commentary after each round so that will keep everyone interested and entertained.

3. FREE public lecture, Tuesday, 12 April 2011: The Mathematics of Celestial Navigation by Martin Bush, Melbourne Planetarium

You are invited to a very special MAV event on Tuesday, 12 April 2011 to be held on board the barque Polly Woodside. On arrival, guests will explore the Polly Woodside Visitor Gallery and meet members of the crew on board the barque where various navigational instruments will be on display. Our special guest lecturer, Martin Bush from Melbourne Museum, will then talk about the mathematics of celestial navigation and MAV members will have a further opportunity to inspect and work with items such a sextant supplied especially for the lecture.

Date: Tuesday, 12 April 2011

Venue: Polly Woodside, 2A Clarendon Street, South Wharf (Melways Reference 2E K9), Victoria

5:30pm Tours of the Polly Woodside commence.

6:10pm The Mathematics of Celestial Navigation by Martin Bush, Melbourne Museum

(Oh, and the MAV will be taking this opportunity to fit in the Annual General Meeting of Members, starting at 6:50pm in the Polly Woodside Visitor Gallery - all MAV members are welcome to stay to see the Annual Report tabled and a new Council for 2011 elected.) 4. VCE Examiners Go Bush (well, at any rate, a little bit out of Melbourne)

Take the family for a weekend adventure in Shepparton, or Geelong or Horsham and combine family pleasure and your own professional learning needs. These two hour programs will provide sessions for Further Mathematics and Maths Methods CAS. Presenters will discuss the processes for setting and marking the 2010 examinations and student responses and difficulties. They will comment on past examinations in general and about specific questions on past examinations. There will be time for questions and discussion. You really have only one decision to make; whether to use TripAdvisor or Expedia to book the family room, because nothing is more certain than that you WILL book now at http://registration.mav.vic.edu.au/events.php?event_id=369

5. On Fools Gold and Gore-Tex

The AMSI and CSIRO crew discuss the mathematics of exotic materials in mathsbyemail at http://www.csiro.au/helix/mathsbyemail/newsletter/newsletter.html and offer you the chance to subscribe to this great classroom resource at http://www.csiro.au/resources/Maths-by-Email--ci_pageNo-2.html

6. Aristotle fails to meet QEDCat's standards

This week the Maths Masters have fun with a great philosopher at http://education.theage.com.au/cmspage.php?intid=147&intversion=80 and then follow up with a film clip of Archimedes on a bad hair day at http://www.qedcat.com/movieclips.html

7. Statewide games days are here again

You will find all of the details at http://www.mav.vic.edu.au/activities/student-activities/student-games-days.html - although Mike Westbrook has said "the registration system for 2011 has changed, so please be patient." Mike Westbrook has also asked me to let everyone know that "the Senior Games Day will run in 2011, but the Student Activities Committee are looking for a school willing to volunteer a venue and Games Day Coorinator - problems and activities will be supplied by the Australian National University and, of course, the MAV office will provide whatever support and assistance required."

9. TEAM:P Makes History

By now every MAV member in a primary school will know that VATE has teamed up with the MAV to deliver professional development and support in both English and Mathematics in primary schools. The two Associations have developed some fantastic offerings for 2011 and beyond, including a new Australian Curriculum bulletin and a swag of professional development. And if your school is not yet a TEAM:P member it jolly well ought to be (Call Michael Green on 9380 2399 or  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Well, I think that is about it for this week. Please do let me know of any mathematics education news going around so that I can pass it on and keep your eye out for edition five in a couple of weeks or so.

Cheers,

Simon
